Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.
To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong.

This what it looks all over america too. Governments must b accountable to its people not business alone. A certain amount of new construction shoyld b dedicated to affordable housing. That is a third of income toward housing. Ee have to fight this shxt. Bring it to their door step and dont let off their necks!

  • Yeah well, that's just, like, your opinion, man

I've seen videos of people dying inside these cage homes from a fire.
They can't even go for the "painless suicide" by jumping out the window like the wtc jumpers, they are trapped in there.
They scream in agony as their skin starts to burn. Their hair melt, their clothes disintegrate.
And is very, very slow. It also shows how much damage the human body can take, although I'm pretty sure they wanted to die as soon as possible.

I am a hongkonger, its stupid to thing that the government isn’t helping, its sad to think this way. My mother and father are divorced and i live in a tiny room in Harbourfront Horizon. The price of the rental fee is getting higher and my mom is unemployed so she is haven’t trouble finding the money to pay for my school fee and the rental. I go to a pretty expensive school, it costs about 45k per three months and its only that expensive because its the only french school in hk. I cant go in any local schools because my native language is just so terrible. Im now trying to study hard like this when i grow up, i can care for my parents and my family wont need to worry about financial issues.

It makes no sense to blame the low taxes, it’s the miss use of taxes that causes the issues. If the government doesn’t take many taxes, then doesn’t use those taxes correctly of course there will be issues. The people of Hong Kong need to hold their government accountable.

Me and my family went to Hong kong in 2017 and one night of hotel there is about $200 usd for one very cramped room big enough to fit about 2 twin size beds and a shower. For the same price when we were in Shanghai we basically were living in a mansion. There's almost no reason at least imo to live in hk over guangzhou or something which is much more affordable in both housing, food etc. although those have also rised a whole lot in the last decade over there.

This situation is horrible & it’s not just San Fran, NY, & HK. Real estate is really expensive over all, renting or buying. I really don’t like the idea of expanding the real estate by destroying the ecosystem. China, Hong Kong, Taiwan have bad problems with smog & pollution. Now you’re going to further ruin nature for cheaper housing prices. In the long run it’s still worsening our situation, just not in the housing aspect. If you do expand into the unused greenery, the houses shouldn’t be high rises. Should be natural, like wood or even mud. I knew it was bad but I didn’t know the extent of it until now.
