Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.
To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong.

0:16 there is no way that graph is accurate AT ALL. How would Los Angeles have a a more expensive housing market than New York? Also what do the numbers on the left signify, nothing is labeled on this chart.

God that's horrible. All those skyscraper blocks so close together makes me feel weird too. It's an awful way to live. I'm so grateful I have a huge studio flat on a quiet leafy side street.

If they are going to have to wait for the government to do something about this housing problem, a solution is never going to happen. In fact, it will probably just continue to get worse.

Residing in a cage home, coffin homes or capsules is alive but not living. Here in lies a warning for all mankind and all upcoming generations - ask not for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee.
    'No Man is an Island'
No man is an island entire of itself; every man
    is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. John Donne
We really must start to think this way, when one persons life is diminished it reflect on us all and we, mankind, are also diminished.

Another reason for Hong Kong government policy in financial income is that the Hong Kong economy have significantly reduced over the past 30 years. For example, in the period of 1980s, Hong Kong’s financial income probably occupied 15% or even more compared with Chinese mainland total country income. However, after coming back to the nation, today Hong Kong only has maybe 2% in the total country, which is much lower compared with the connecting city - Shenzhen. And with the Free-Trade Port requirement, local government cannot increase their financial tax flexibly by themselves.

Gone are the days when plagues and poxes could wipe out a quarter of humanity within a month. Also modern laws have made genocide illegal, so there goes that fix. All that is left are natural disasters and humans have gotten pretty good at surviving those too, what with building standard and safety drills. Been talking with Zeus, Neptune, Thor and Jupiter about what to do about it. No decision has been made yet...YET.

Bad situation. But honestly, the government freeing up more space for urban development would only provide incremental change. It is an international market, for every new acre that is made available, a new buyer will be willing to pay high prices. Most of these people are not just on the brink of being able to afford housing, they are wildly off the mark. Unless housing was created specifically to cater to poorer residents (which is unlikely) I don't see change in the near future.

What about all the cities in China that are pretty much completely empty? I realize they’re mainland and not island, but there is space to live, work, and relax, already there, already built.and almost no one is using it, and the government just keeps building. All these people crowded into these spaces could be “migrated” to those empty cities, and bring in plenty of money for the government.

This is got to be changed, it is below human dignity, why their government do not do anything? Is this the way the Government look after its people? The government officials should take turn to live in this kind of space for a month, then they would do something, the government suppose to be the servant of people, how can they have no feeling to see people living in such terrible condition?

It's a closet apartment but $267 is nothing, compared to $1800+ a month in places like New York or Florida. Too many people is the problem, how about having some actual population control in Asia.
And I don't agree with developing every inch of land. That destroys the environment which is everything. Solution: Stop pumping out damn babies like a virus. Humans are the worst species in the universe.
