Why no aquarium has a great white shark

  • Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here's why that's so difficult.
There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display.
Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks.
By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean.
In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank.
Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards."
Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive.

Wow. This is really powerful and crazy. I remember seeing the baby white at the Monterey that they took in because it was actually hurt but I had no idea why Great White Sharks couldn’t be kept in adulthood. Sharks are my favorite animal and I highly recommend swimming with these beautiful creatures in the wild if you want to see them. 💙🦈

I personally think keeping fish in an aquarium is fine as long as they are comfortable! Don’t put them in chlorine water, dont put them in walls if they hurt themselves. It’s weird how people want to see sharks irl so bad and want to have them in small tanks?

I used to volunteer at an aquarium and I had to research all this myself because I had so many guests try to argue with me that some other aquarium they went to had a white shark (the aquariums they mentioned never did). They usually would confuse the reef sharks for white sharks, and I even had a woman try to tell me that the whale sharks in the Georgia Aquarium were white sharks. Needless to say, I don’t work in jobs where I directly interact with guests anymore. (The truth is that the customer is almost never right.)

I hate to see highly intelligent creatures in captivity. A crab would eat its mother and doesn't care about anything as long as it's kept well fed, but highly intelligent and social animals in captivity break my heart. Sea mammals, dolphins for instance, social and affectionate creatures used for entertainment purposes, so that people can interact with them and take cute pictures, that has to stop.

For all the people who think they're sick and twisted for capturing a white shark, remember that they did not know the effects it could have on the shark. MANY aquatic animals do perfectly fine in aquariums, sometimes they even flourish. They thought that if other animals can survive in captivity, why cant a Great White Shark? As it turned out, they can't. That is why they have stopped all operations of capturing and containing these sharks. Who knows, maybe in the future, we would have ways to contain them in a environment that is comfortable for them.

  • Junghee
    Junghee ヶ月 前

The video says it for itself but I wish you would be more blunt and just say that captivity causes the early and unnatural death of these animals. Just say that these people are only out for money and don't care about the animals they are taking from their natural habitat, that they think that the revenue they earn is worth the inevitable death they know they will cause.

An adult male Orca is 5 times the size (mass) of a great white but can adapt to those paddle pools they put them in. The instinctive shark can last 3 to 6 months but the adaptive Orca 20 - 30 years... Those poor sharks keep bumping their nose until they die. On the other hand the Orca indures 30 years of prison. In its body and its mind..... There is a lot of crap out there from SeaWorld saying "we care for our animal's" I'm sure they do.... Buy key thing is , instinctive fish or adaptive whale, evolution has produced two fine specimen's that deserve to roam. Why, because that is how they evolved. Like the dudes post before me, get in a boat and go see them in the wild... And if you can't afford that, go to Imax. And if that's not good enough. Ask someone who knows about these animals and where they are. Aussie, SA, USA, NZ, Canada, Sri Lanka, India.... I could keep going, with the right guide u can see these animals anywhere

It is impossible to keep a great white in captivity because of the shark's size and the fact they must keep moving due to their size and the way they sleep when they sleep its gliding through the water towards the bottom at an angle these sharks can grow to 23ft. in length and the girth on these animals is phenomenal they may last in captivity anywhere from 3-5 days depending on the size and depth of aquarium these animals must remain in the open ocean to live not in a aquarium where their lifespan will be cut short these are magnificent animals and we can appreciate them better by leaving them where they are free ...in the ocean 🐬
